Serif Basaran

SWITZERLAND

Şerif Başaran was born in 1975 in Switzerland and received his primary and secondary education there. In 1991, he moved to Istanbul with his family. After completing high school, university, and military service, he moved to Australia in 2002 and opened his first cafe.

AUSTRALIA

Şerif Başaran began his first cafe experience as a franchisee and received his first coffee training from the 2003 World Barista Champion, Paul Bassett. Between 2002 and 2007, in addition to managing cafes, he actively participated in the opening of various branches and provided coffee training.

TURKEY

In 2007, he was invited to a coffee fair in Turkey and aimed to bring Turkey onto international coffee platforms. To this end, he brought coffee enthusiasts together under the name “Coffee Stars” in Turkey. In 2011, he founded the Coffee Factory to offer coffee enthusiasts high-quality fresh beans, quality equipment, and pre- and post-sales support.

He served as the Turkey SCAE Coordinator from 2007 to 2011, working to set the standards for espresso-based drinks in Turkey and to raise the quality bar through training. In 2008, he received the “Best Coffee Educator” award (Coffee Excellence Award) among 1900 members at an event organized by SCAE in Copenhagen. For the last 10 years, Şerif Başaran has been actively serving as a judge in coffee competitions (World Barista Championship) organized by SCAE worldwide. Additionally, he provides training through workshops at fairs. In 2008, when it was announced that a neighboring country’s name would be used in competitions planned to be held internationally related to Turkish coffee for political and economic reasons, he served as the General Director of the competitions organized under the name World Cezve/Ibrik Championship. Despite all pressures from sponsors for four years, the neighboring country’s name was not accepted, and the competition name was registered.
